Hi! I’m Ishini Michelle Mendis (Ish for short!), a London-born advocate for youth empowerment and holistic well-being. With a blend of British and Sri Lankan heritage, my journey spans diverse roles and experiences, all centered around community engagement, fitness advocacy, and youth development.
Personal Transformation & Roots of Passion
The origins of my passion for helping others can be traced back to my challenging school years, where I faced adversity without the traditional support systems, making it difficult to shape my own identity. I was lucky enough to have some teachers who saw my potential and didn’t let me give up (demonstrating the power of others who advocate for young people)
Then, something remarkable happened when I joined the RAF Air Cadets. This marked the beginning of a profound transformation in my life. Not only did I acquire crucial life skills, but I also discovered the immense power of mentorship and leadership.
My journey in youth organizations began early on at the age of 14, from assisting teachers at Whitchurch Primary School to volunteering with notable groups like RAF Air Cadets and Brownies. These experiences unexpectedly paved the way for my current path – pursuing a MA to become a Professional Youth Worker (JNC/ ESB endorsed). This program is providing me with the necessary tools to cultivate young minds in a variety of settings, igniting an even deeper passion for youth work within me.
Fitness and Championing Diversity:
My commitment to personal fitness evolved into a journey of mental and physical well-being, leading me to advocate for holistic health as a personal trainer. Navigating male-dominated fields as an Asian woman, I challenge stereotypes and foster inclusivity, empowering young people to overcome societal barriers.
A Journey Towards Education:
I am currently pursing a MA in Applied Anthropology, Community & Youth Work (JNC/ ESB endorsed) at Goldsmiths University of London, formalizing my expertise and amplifying my impact.
Giving Back
My commitment includes giving back to communities and advocating for children’s rights. I’ve collaborated with Jamie Oliver’s Charity BiteBack2030 and contributed to Premier Global’s blog to address health and wellbeing challenges and share how I overcame them, aiming to create lasting change.
